ABSTRACT

Urbanization in India has accelerated rapidly over the past few decades, driven by economic growth, industrialization, and rural-to-urban migration. This phenomenon has profoundly impacted Indian society, reshaping its socio-economic landscape. While urbanization has led to increased economic opportunities, improved infrastructure, and better access to services, it has also exacerbated socio-economic disparities, strained urban resources, and contributed to environmental degradation. This article explores the dual impact of urbanization on Indian society, analyzing its economic benefits and the accompanying social challenges. It discusses how urbanization has transformed labor markets, housing, and infrastructure while also creating issues such as poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. The article also examines the role of government policies in managing urban growth and addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. Ultimately, it argues that sustainable urban development in India requires a balanced approach that leverages the benefits of urbanization while mitigating its negative impacts on society.
